In a country like India, where a large section of the population struggles to afford basic healthcare, the PM Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) comes as a big relief. Launched by the Government of India, this scheme is all about making affordable and quality medicines available to everyone. But this scheme is now facing criticisms under Modi Govt 3.0 because of reduced visibility and limited access in rural areas, and lack of updated performance data.

What is PM Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana?
The PMBJP is a government scheme that aims to provide generic medicines to people at lower prices through special medical stores called Jan Aushadhi Kendras.
Generic medicines are just as effective as branded ones, but they cost much less. The idea is: good health shouldn’t come with a high price tag.
What is Jan Aushadhi Kendra?
These are pharmacies set up under the PMBJP scheme. They sell only generic medicines approved by the Government of India. These medicines are tested for quality and safety, and cost up to 50%–90% less than the market price of branded medicines.
As of now, thousands of such Kendras have been opened across cities, towns, and even in rural areas.
What kind of medicines are available?
The Jan Aushadhi Kendras offer a wide range of medicines, including:
- Medicines for fever, infections, diabetes, blood pressure
- Antibiotics
- Eye drops, syrups, ointments
- Surgical items and sanitary pads (at very low prices)
All these medicines are approved by WHO-GMP certified manufacturers (meaning they meet international quality standards).
